Applications for the winter semester: Your dream degree awaits!

Whether you’ve just finished your A-levels or it’s been a while since you left school, starting university is a special move that opens up many opportunities. At the same time, there are some important decisions to make. Which city suits me best? Which degree program should I consider? And how do I apply for a place? As procedures and deadlines vary depending on the subject, it isn’t always easy to stay on top of the whole process. LMU therefore supports prospective students by providing all relevant information on the application process and the deadlines. Degree programs with nationwide admission restrictions

Restricted admission means that only a limited number of places are available for a given degree program. The number of places is usually determined by the universities’ teaching capacity or by particularly high demand.

Degree programs with nationwide admission restrictions (in Germany) include medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry and pharmacy. In these subjects, places are granted via the central allocation procedure run by Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung (the University Admissions Foundation). The deadline for A-level graduates who achieved their qualifications after 16 January of the current year is 15 July. Applications are submitted via the hochschulstart.de portal.

Degree programs with local admission restrictions

In addition to subjects with nationwide admission restrictions, there are also degree programs where local demand exceeds the number of available places. As a result, a given degree program may have unrestricted admission at one university but still be subject to restrictions at another.

At LMU, this applies, for example, to bachelor’s and state examination degree programs in areas such as law, psychology, business administration and informatics. You can find out whether a degree program has local admission restrictions using the LMU Course Finder. The deadline for such degree programs in the first and subsequent semesters is 15 July. Please note: Even a minor subject in a dual bachelor’s course may be subject to admission restrictions and require a separate application, even if the major subject has no admission restrictions.

International applicants

For international students, too, the binding application deadline for the 2026/27 winter semester is 15 July. For non-EU citizens, this applies to all subjects. For foreign EU citizens, it applies to degree programs with no admission restrictions. Degree programs with no admission restrictions

For degree programs with no admission restrictions, the central LMU admissions procedure does not apply for German nationals and students who have completed their secondary education in Germany. However, please be aware that some faculties may have their own procedures, such as aptitude tests, pre-registration requirements and/or study orientation procedures. The relevant deadlines are set by the faculties themselves and may vary. Information on specific requirements and deadlines is published on the web pages for the individual degree programs in the LMU Course Finder. Researching this information in good time makes it easier to take any additional requirements into account right from the start.
